What are Major Groups and Family Groups in Simphony?

Major Groups are used to categorize menu items for grouping and reporting purposes. Think of Major Groups as parent items for reporting.

Some examples of Major Groups are :

  • Food
  • Liquor
  • Beer
  • Wine

Family Groups are also used to categorize menu items for grouping and reporting, but they offer a greater level of detail. If we take each Major Group and further break it down, we get Family Groups.

Some examples include:

  • Appetizer
  • Soup
  • Salad
  • Pizza
  • Sides

Adding Major Groups and Family Groups

Major Groups and Family Groups can be found at the Enterprise and Property levels in Simphony EMC, but in order to keep the reporting correct, I recommend you add them at the enterprise level.

Steps for adding new Major Groups:

  • Open the Major Groups module from the Configuration tab
  • Insert a new record using the green plus in the menu bar
  • In the new pop-up window, enter the record number and name of the new Major Group
  • Click “OK” to confirm the submission.

You can follow the same process to add new Family Groups. The only difference is that family groups also have a parent Major Group, so ensure you assign one after adding the new Family Group.

You can assign the Major Groups and Family Groups to the menu items in the menu items maintenance module.

Reporting Groups

Both major groups and family groups can be assigned reporting groups. Reporting groups are another way of grouping the major and family groups.

You must enter a number (other than zero) for each group.

For example, we use:

  • Food: 1
  • Liquor: 2
  • Beer: 3 and so on.

You can do the same for the Family Groups. Assign Reporting Group 1 for all food items, 2 for all liquor Items, etc.

Removing Major Groups and Family Groups

If you have any groups that are not in use, you can consider removing them as long as they were never used in the past. If the groups were used in the past and have some historical data attached, do not delete them.

In order to remove one of the groups, you can simply highlight it by clicking the rectangle next to its name and then clicking delete. Confirm by selecting “yes”.

Once all your Major Groups and Family Groups are configured, this is how they show up in reporting:
